Culture shock tends to be an occupational disease of people who have been suddenly transplanted abroad. Like most ailments, it has its own symptoms, cause, and cure. Many missionaries have suffered from it. Some never recovered, and left their field. Some live in a constant state of such shock. Many recover beautifully. As will be clear from the implications of Dr. Oberg’s article, the state of culture shock in which a Christian lives will have great bearing on his temperament and witness.

Nous nous intéresserons ici à la Pragmatique (au Comment) de la communication interpersonnelle telle qu'elle a été étudiée et modélisée par l'école nord-américaine de Palo Alto sous l'impulsion du Professeur Paul Watzlawick. Nous montrerons en quoi cette façon de considérer le comportement de deux individus qui communiquent relève d'une approche complexe, où la circularité et la rétroactivité des échanges fait place à une causalité linéaire.
Nous partirons du postulat que lorsqu'une communication entre deux personnes est établie, il n'y a plus ni commencement ni fin, mais un modèle circulaire d'échanges, dont ni l'un ni l'autre des interlocuteurs n'a la prééminence. La communication sera considérée alors comme système d'interactions en marche, et, à l'extrême, certains ont pu dire que : "On ne communique pas, mais on prend part à une communication."

Even if communication partners speak the same language it is not always possible to avoid misunderstanding. Verbal messages are not as simple and plain as they sometimes seem to be. A classical model by the German psychologist and communication expert Friedemann Schulz von Thun shows that every verbal expression has four “sides” that have to be respected and taken into consideration. Neglecting some of these sides increases the risk that sender and receiver of the message misunderstand each other. This is particularly true when sender and receiver come from different cultural backgrounds, for example when volunteers work with refugees and asylum seekers. But even people from the same culture, region and linguistic background can benefit from learning, knowing and using the model for communication processes, either professionally or privately.

Le projet ‘Former les Médiateurs Interculturels pour une Europe Multiculturelle’ (Train Intercultural Mediators for a Multicultural Europe : TIME) explore les pratiques de formation et d’emploi des médiateurs interculturels pour les immigrants (IMfi) à travers l’Union Européenne. Il promeut l’échange de bonnes pratiques dans le domaine de la médiation interculturelle en proposant un modèle de programme de formation aussi bien pour les médiateurs interculturels que pour leurs formateurs. "Le manque de reconnaissance de la valeur sociale des services d'interprétation, les mauvaises conditions de travail et la rémunération inadéquate continuent d'affecter les services sociaux ou l'interprétation communautaire. Mise à jour en 2016.
L'interprétation communautaire, qui comprend l'interprétation judiciaire et médicale, suit le modèle typique d'une profession à ses débuts. Au début, elle se caractérise par un manque de normes de formation et de pratique, une désorganisation et une désunion parmi les praticiens, un manque de reconnaissance de la profession parmi les clients et le public, et de mauvaises conditions de travail. Ces circonstances s'améliorent à mesure que les praticiens s'unissent et forment des associations professionnelles pour imposer la discipline et la normalisation et pour obtenir la reconnaissance par l'éducation, la législation et les relations publiques. Cet article définit les termes ""interprétation communautaire"" et ""profession"", présente une analyse comparative de l'interprétation communautaire et d'autres professions, et recommande un plan d'action pour promouvoir la profession à moyen et long termes."
"Lack of recognition of the social value of interpreting services, poor working conditions and inadequate remuneration still plague social service or community interpreting.
Community interpreting, which includes court and medical interpreting, is following the typical pattern of a profession in its infancy. In the beginning it is characterized by a lack of standards for training and practice, disorganisation and disunity among practitioners, a lack of recognition of the profession among clients and the public, and poor working conditions. These circumstances improve as practitioners unite and form professional associations to impose discipline and standardization and to achieve recognition through education, legislation and public relations. This paper will define the terms ""community interpreting"" and ""profession,"" present a comparative analysis of community interpreting and other professions, and recommend a course of action to promote the profession in the medium and long terms."

Né de la rencontre et de l’entraide entre une Belge et une réfugiée rwandaise en 1994, le mouvement Convivial a pour objectif de favoriser l’insertion des réfugiés en Belgique dans une dynamique d’écoute et d’engagement réciproque entre Belges et réfugiés. Convivial accompagne les réfugiés reconnus tout au long de leur parcours, depuis leur installation autonome dans un logement jusqu’aux premiers pas vers la réalisation d’un projet d’insertion sociale et professionnelle. En parallèle, Convivial organise des dispositifs de sensibilisation du grand public et de mise en relation entre citoyens résidents en Belgique et réfugiés.
Convivial supports recognised refugees throughout their journey, from their autonomous settlement in a home to the first steps towards the realisation of a social and professional integration project. In parallel, Convivial organises awareness-raising measures for the general public and contacts between citizens residing in Belgium and refugees.

This guide presents in detail the skills, competences and other characteristics that research has proven necessary or desirable for an intercultural mediator. After depicting the IMfI profile, the guide "translates" competences acquirable through training into a list of learning outcomes. What should an IMfI know, understand and be able to do after his training? Thus the guide provides a benchmark for the design of effective training programs and assessment tools, the detection of possible skill gaps, and continuous training needs of IMfI.

Parmi les personnes qui sont en contact direct avec les migrants on trouve les professeurs, les formateurs et tous les personnels éducatifs ou sociaux qui au quotidien travaillent auprès d’eux. Selon le rapport du Parlement et du Conseil Européens le rôle primordial de l’éducation est de renforcer la cohésion sociale et de permettre aux individus d’entrer et de rester dans le monde du travail. De plus, ”l’éducation contribue à préserver et à rafraîchir les fondements culturels communs de la société et à apprendre les valeurs sociales et civiques essentielles telles que la citoyenneté, l’égalité, la tolérance et le respect, et c’est particulièrement important dans une période où tous les états membres s’interrogent sur comment gérer la diversité sociale et culturelle en constante augmentation. Mais en réalité les migrants sont moins susceptibles que les natifs du pays de participer à la formation pour adultes. Les formateurs, les professeurs ainsi que tous les autres personnels éducatifs peuvent servir de pont entre le monde des migrants ou des minorités ethniques et le monde du pays d’accueil, mais ce rôle demande des compétences spécifiques pour enseigner dans une perspective multiculturelle. Pour développer l’empathie et la compréhension de la situation des migrants il est nécessaire de mettre les professeurs et formateurs en situation, dans la "peau" d’un migrant.
The integration of people who migrate to other countries is a particular challenge: it is a complex and long-term process. Anyone who supports migration should make an effort to promote the integration of migrants already living in the country as well as newcomer migrants. Among those who are in direct contact with migrants are teachers, trainers and all the educational or social workers who work with them on a daily basis. According to the report of the European Parliament and Council, the primary role of education is to strengthen social cohesion and to enable people to enter and stay in the world of work. In addition, "education helps to preserve and refresh the common cultural foundations of society and to learn essential social and civic values such as citizenship, equality, tolerance and respect, and this is particularly important at a time when all member states are wondering how to manage the ever-increasing social and cultural diversity. But in reality migrants are less likely than natives of the country to participate in adult education. Trainers, teachers and all other educational staff can serve as a bridge between the world of migrants or ethnic minorities and the host country world, but this role requires specific skills to teach from a multicultural perspective. To develop empathy and understanding of the situation of migrants it is necessary to put teachers and trainers in situation, in the "skin" of a migrant.

Pays européens. Comme l’a souligné la Commission européenne, «Deux processus sont essentiels pour
améliorer les résultats des immigrants: élimination des inégalités et acquisition de
compétences. Ces défis sont au cœur des politiques d'intégration en Europe » 2 .
La migration doit être envisagée dans une perspective au niveau macro (processus d’élaboration des politiques:
législation, institutionnalisation de la politique de migration, stratégies d’inclusion des immigrés,
questions de sécurité, questions relatives aux droits de l’homme), mais aussi dans une perspective micro-économique
répondre aux questions sur la vie quotidienne des migrants). La stratégie européenne dans le domaine de

Migration is to be considered in a macro-level perspective (policy-making processes: legislation, institutionalization of migration policy, strategies of inclusion of immigrants, security concerns, human rights issues) but also in a micro-level perspective (to raise and
answer questions about migrants’ everyday life). The European strategy in the field of migration and asylum has focused on two approaches: the security approach (short term strategy focussed on struggle against illegal immigration) and the integration approach (long term strategy, enhancing all the chances for migrants to benefit by the same and equal chances in the host societies). Each member state and the EU as a whole has then to develop skills and
professional competences related to immigrants needs focusing on issues as acceptance, both behavioural, historical and cultural, social integration, diversity management.
The profession of cultural mediation plays an emblematic role in this context. Its main mission is to solve or propose alternative solutions to conflicts rising between the national institutions and the migrants. The approach is a very practical and basic one: accompanying migrants in their everyday process of integration. It is both a short term and long term. On one hand, intercultural mediators may be faced to illegal migrants or migrants in a transitory
position (waiting for the agreement to stay) or to new legal migrants who deserve to know the national background of the host society. On the other hand, they are working in the long term with migrants to make them become autonomous, independent and free towards institutions to
avoid any future conflict through a mutual understanding.
This is the main purpose of the TIPS project, initiated by For.com (Italy)3 with partners in five countries Auxilium (Austria), Iriv (France), Gruppo Pragma (Italy), HOU (Greece) and TEU (Poland) : to propose a continuous training programme for cultural mediators. After a
presentation of the general framework of migration and the population of migrants in each of our five countries, we will focus on the profession of cultural mediation, the main skills and competences required for this brand new profession and the training course already proposed
in order to underline the added value brought by the TIPS in developing a pilot training course for cultural mediators."

Cette étude s’intéresse au récit narratif en tant qu’outil de résilience assistée pour des adolescents ayant vécu une migration. La résilience y est conceptualisée comme un processus permettant l'adaptation réussie dans un contexte d'adversité (Ionescu, 2011). Les défis liés à la migration sont complexes, surtout lors de l’adolescence, période d’importants changements développementaux marquée par la quête identitaire. L’analyse qualitative des récits vise à comprendre le processus naturel de résilience chez ces jeunes, particulièrement au niveau de la capacité à la narration de soi, soit la capacité à se raconter sa propre histoire de vie avec cohérence.

Do we need to bother about culture? Every visitor of this site has her or his unique personality, history, and interest. At the same time, we share our human nature. We are group animals. We use language and empathy, and practice collaboration and inter-group competition. The unwritten rules of how we do these things differ from one human group to another. “Culture” is how we call these unwritten rules about how to be a good member of the group.
What is culture ?
Simply said, culture is how you were raised. It developed while you grew up. With a computer metaphor, culture is the software of our minds. We need shared software in order to communicate. So culture is about what we share with those around us.

This film project documents an extraordinary project in which five people from the Netherlands and Belgium were brought into a state of hypnosis, so they could gain deeper insight into the journey of a Syrian refugee. Under the guidance of a professional hypnotherapist, the participants experienced the journey of 29-year-old Marwa, from Syria, as she made her way to safety to the Netherlands.

Abstract
This reprinted chapter originally appeared in (Psychology of Intergroup Relations [ed. by S. Worchel; W. G. Austin], 1986, 7-24.) The aim of this chapter is to present an outline of a theory of intergroup conflict and some preliminary data relating to the theory. It begins with a discussion of alternative approaches to intergroup conflict with special attention to the "realistic group conflict theory" (RCT). RCT's relative neglect of the processes underlying the development and maintenance of group identity and the possibly autonomous effects upon the in-group and intergroup behavior is responsible for some inconsistencies between the empirical data and the theory in its "classical" form. In this sense, the theoretical orientation to be outlined in this chapter is intended not to replace RCT, but to supplement it in some respects that seem essential for an adequate social psychology of intergroup conflict--particularly as the understanding of the psychological aspects of social change cannot be achieved without an appropriate analysis of the social psychology of social conflict. The authors argue that people derive a sense of self-worth and social belongingness from their memberships in groups, and so they are motivated to draw favorable comparisons between their own group and other groups. In 1976, Hall developed the iceberg analogy of culture. If the culture of a society was the
iceberg, Hall reasoned, than there are some aspects visible, above the water, but there is a larger
portion hidden beneath the surface.
What does that mean?
The external, or conscious, part of culture is what we can see and is the tip of the iceberg and
includes behaviors and some beliefs. The internal, or subconscious, part of culture is below the
surface of a society and includes some beliefs and the values and thought patterns that underlie
behavior.

The Developmental Model of Intercultural Sensitivity (DMIS) was created by Dr. Milton Bennett (1986, 1993, 2004, 2013) as a framework to explain how people experience and engage cultural difference. The DMIS is grounded theory; it is based on observations he made in both academic and corporate settings about how people become more competent intercultural communicators. Using concepts from constructivist psychology and communication theory, he organized these observations into positions along a continuum of increasing sensitivity to cultural difference.
The underlying assumption of the model is that as one’s perceptual organization of cultural difference becomes more complex, one’s experience of culture becomes more sophisticated and the potential for exercising competence in intercultural relations increases. By recognizing how cultural difference is being experienced, predictions about the effectiveness of intercultural communication can be made and educational interventions can be tailored to facilitate development along the continuum.

Twenty years ago, psychologist Arthur Aron discovered that four minutes of looking into each other's eyes can bring people closer. Using this discovery, Amnesty International Poland decided to carry out a simple experiment where refugees and Europeans sat opposite each other and looked into each other's eyes.
The experiment participants were ordinary people. The situations were not staged; we wanted to get natural, spontaneous reactions. The people sitting opposite each other had not known each other before and saw each other for the first time during the experiment. What is important, the refugees mostly came from Syria and had not been living in Europe for longer than a year.

« Durant quelques minutes, votre téléphone sera celui d’un réfugié ». Pour ceux qui font le périple vers l'Europe depuis des zones de guerre comme la Syrie, le téléphone portable est un instrument aussi essentiel que vital. Et pour raconter les périls auxquels font face ces réfugiés, la BBC a eu l'idée d'une vidéo, construite grâce au témoignage d’une centaine de migrants et d’humanitaires, avec une mise en scène originale.
Sur cette vidéo (à voir de préférence sur mobile, évidemment), on voit donc son téléphone converti en outil cartographique pour préparer le voyage depuis l’Irak ou la Syrie et tenter d'embarquer à Izmir, en Turquie, en outil de géolocalisation pour se repérer en pleine mer Méditerranée ou de communication avec la famille ou d’éventuels passeurs. La solitude, la détresse, la peur et les problèmes de réseaux, d’accès à Internet, de batterie et de fragilité de ces machines, ou de confiance entre les personnes rencontrées sur la route sont ici un peu plus palpables que dans un reportage écrit.

Témoignage
Ayham Ahmed jouait du piano dans un camp de réfugiés en Syrie lorsque son piano a été détruit par le groupe Etat islamique. Il a décidé de rejoindre l'Allemagne et continue à pratiquer sa passion.
Il chante et joue avec la même passion dans un magasin de piano à Dortmund (Allemagne). Ayham Ahmed est maintenant loin de la Syrie où ses notes ont longtemps résonné au milieu du chaos, dans un camp de réfugiés. Ses vidéos, où il joue dans les rues dévastées de Yarmouk, ont fait le tour du monde.
Une nouvelle vie
Malgré les combats et les souffrances, il n'a jamais arrêté de jouer. "Même si les gens ont faim, ils aiment la musique, ils aiment les chansons. Avec notre musique, on voulait donner de l'espoir aux gens", explique Ayham Ahmed. Mais son piano brûlé, il décide de fuir, vers la Turquie, la Grèce et aujourd'hui l'Allemagne. Désormais, il peut envisager une nouvelle vie loin de la guerre. Émue par son destin, une marque de piano a décidé de lui offrir un instrument. De quoi lui permettre de continuer à jouer pour ceux qui sont encore en Syrie.
